The American Academy of Political and Social Science is a learned society created in 1889 to promote progress in the social sciences. Early organizers, led by Edmund J. James and connected to institutions including the University of Pennsylvania, Swarthmore, and Bryn Mawr, set out to build a place where research and practical reform could inform one another.
Over time, the Academy became best known for The ANNALS of the American Academy of Political and Social Science. According to the Academy, the journal has for well over a century brought together scholars and public officials to address major issues such as poverty, inequality, public policy, and social change.
Rather than representing a single authorial voice, the Academy serves as a forum for ideas across political and social science. Its history reflects a broad mission: to share reliable research, encourage informed public discussion, and connect scholarship with the problems societies are trying to solve.
