About the author

Born in Blois on August 2, 1797, Amédée Thierry was a French journalist and historian, and the younger brother of the historian Augustin Thierry. He began his career in journalism and public service before turning more fully to historical writing.

He is best known for works on the Gauls, Roman Gaul, and the later Roman Empire. His writing played a major role in popularizing figures such as Vercingetorix and in renewing 19th-century interest in the ancient peoples of France.

Thierry died in Paris on March 27, 1873. Though scholarly methods have changed since his time, his histories remained influential for the way they brought distant centuries to life for a broad reading public.
