About the author

Born in Blois on August 2, 1797, Amédée Thierry became a French journalist and historian best known for his work on ancient Gaul and early medieval France. He was the younger brother of the historian Augustin Thierry, and both were part of a generation that helped reshape how French history was written.

He is especially remembered for major historical studies such as Histoire des Gaulois and Récits de l'histoire romaine au Ve siècle, works that explored the peoples, conflicts, and cultural changes that shaped France before and after the fall of Rome. His writing aimed to make serious history readable, combining scholarship with a strong sense of story.

Thierry died in Paris on March 27, 1873. Though less widely known today than some of his contemporaries, he remains an important figure in the development of modern French historical writing.
