About the author

Born in Ohio in 1858 and later active in agricultural education and public service, Alva Agee wrote for farmers who wanted clear, usable guidance rather than theory for its own sake. Sources connected with his books describe him as having served in agricultural extension at the Pennsylvania State College and the New Jersey State College of Agriculture, and as secretary of the New Jersey State Department of Agriculture.

Agee is best known for practical works such as Crops and Methods for Soil Improvement (1912), Right Use of Lime in Soil Improvement (1919), and First Steps in Farming (1923). In the preface to Crops and Methods for Soil Improvement, he explains that the book is not meant as a technical treatise, but as a straightforward guide to the crops, methods, and fertilizers that help maintain fertile soil.

That plainspoken approach is what still makes his work appealing. Instead of writing only for specialists, he aimed to help ordinary farmers understand how better soil management could support better harvests and a steadier living. Agee died in 1943.
