1854–1917
A self-taught Argentine poet and journalist, he wrote with urgency, moral force, and a deep sympathy for people pushed to the margins. His work helped make him one of the most recognizable literary voices in Argentina under the pen name Almafuerte.
Born Pedro Bonifacio Palacios in San Justo, Buenos Aires Province, on May 13, 1854, Almafuerte became known as a poet, journalist, and teacher. He is remembered above all by his pen name, which means "strong soul," a fitting match for the stern, encouraging tone many readers hear in his poems.
Accounts of his life consistently describe him as largely self-taught and marked by hardship from an early age. Those experiences fed a body of writing known for resilience, moral intensity, and concern for social justice, helping him stand apart in Argentine letters at the turn of the twentieth century.
He died in La Plata on February 28, 1917. Long after his death, Almafuerte has remained a familiar presence in Argentine culture, with poems and sayings that continued to circulate widely and keep his voice alive for new generations of readers.
