About the author

Born Alice Laura Vansittart Strettell on January 1, 1850, she became known after marriage as Mrs. J. Comyns Carr, or Alice Comyns Carr. She was a British writer as well as a theatre costume designer, and her work is closely linked with the Aesthetic movement.

She published books in several forms, including travel writing, fiction, and memoir. Among the works associated with her are North Italian Folk, Cottage Folk, and J. Comyns Carr: Stray Memories, by His Wife. Her writing shows a wide range of interests, from everyday social life to personal recollection.

She was also active in the artistic world around her husband, Joseph Comyns Carr, an art critic and theatre manager. Today she is remembered both for her own books and for her place in the lively literary and theatrical culture of late 19th- and early 20th-century Britain.
