About the author

Born in Guimarães on December 3, 1882, Alfredo Pimenta was a Portuguese historian, poet, and writer whose career ranged across literature, journalism, and political thought. He studied law at the University of Coimbra and went on to build a remarkably wide body of work.

Pimenta is remembered not only for his books but also for his forceful personality and shifting political path, which took him through several ideological camps over the course of his life. That unpredictability, along with his appetite for debate, helped make him a striking and sometimes divisive figure in Portuguese cultural life.

He died in Lisbon on October 15, 1950. Today he is still noted for the sheer range of his writing and for the mark he left on Portuguese historiography and public discussion.
