About the author

Born in Figueira da Foz in 1859 and deceased in Lisbon in 1929, he was a Portuguese engineering general, politician, and colonial administrator. Sources consistently describe him as active across military, academic, and governmental life, which gives his work an unusually broad perspective on the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

He taught at the Army School and took on a series of missions in Portuguese Africa, especially in Mozambique. He is noted for serving as governor-general there, and official material from Portugal’s diplomatic service also highlights his work connected to the Companhia de Moçambique and his later roles in the colonial administration.

Alongside his public career, he published writing on colonial policy, including work related to Lourenço Marques. For listeners coming to him through his books, he stands out as a figure whose writing grew directly out of experience in administration, military engineering, and Portugal’s overseas empire.
