About the author

Born in Aachen on August 15, 1808, Alfred von Reumont was a German scholar, historian, and diplomat. He studied at the universities of Bonn and Heidelberg, then began a long connection with Italy that shaped both his public career and his writing.

Reumont served in diplomatic posts linked to Florence and later to the Prussian legation in Rome. Alongside that work, he built a reputation as a prolific author, especially on Italian history and culture. He wrote on subjects including the city of Rome, Italian statesmen, and the Renaissance, and he became particularly well known for studies connected with Florence and the Medici.

He died in Aachen on April 27, 1887. Remembered today as both a man of letters and a working diplomat, he helped bring nineteenth-century German readers closer to Italy's political, artistic, and historical life.
