About the author

Born in Aachen on August 15, 1808, Alfred von Reumont studied at Bonn and Heidelberg before entering Prussian diplomatic service. His career took him to Florence, Constantinople, and Rome, and he became especially closely linked with Italy, whose history and culture remained the central passion of his life.

Alongside diplomacy, he built a substantial reputation as a writer and historian. He wrote extensively on Italian history, Rome, and the Renaissance, including work on Lorenzo de' Medici, and was valued in his own time as a learned cultural bridge between Germany and Italy. He was ennobled in 1846 and continued to be known both as a public servant and as a man of letters.

Reumont died in Aachen on April 27, 1887. He is still remembered as one of the 19th century's notable German interpreters of Italian history, admired for combining firsthand experience, archival curiosity, and a lasting enthusiasm for the world he described.
