About the author

Born in London on 22 November 1856, he was the son of publisher David Nutt and grew up in a literary world. After education in England and France and further business training in Europe, he took charge of the family firm in 1878 and continued its strong interest in literature and scholarship.

Alongside publishing, he became known as a folklorist and scholar of Celtic and Arthurian subjects. He was active in the Folklore Society and wrote influential studies on myth, legend, and the medieval stories of the Holy Grail and King Arthur, helping bring serious attention to traditions that had often been treated as curiosities.

He died on 21 May 1910. Though remembered as a publisher, his lasting reputation also rests on the energy he brought to folklore studies and on the bridge he built between publishing, literary history, and the study of traditional story.
