About the author

Born on September 11, 1887, in Parikkala, Alfred Saukkonen was a Finnish teacher and author. He graduated from the Sortavala teacher seminary in 1915 and worked as a teacher in Räisälä until 1928, after which he continued teaching in Uusikaupunki.

He wrote newspaper articles as well as fiction, and he became particularly known as a writer of children's and youth literature. His books included poems, fairy tales, and adventure stories such as Ihmeitten maa, Lentomatka Pohjoisnavalle, and Kultainen linna.

Saukkonen was also involved in youth associations, scouting, and the temperance movement, which helps explain the strong sense of guidance and character-building seen in much of his work. He died in Uusikaupunki on September 3, 1946.
