About the author

Born in New York in 1844, Alfred Seelye Roe served in the Union Army during the Civil War, including time as a prisoner of war. After the war, he built a long career in education and became principal of Worcester High School in Massachusetts.

He was also active in public life, serving in the Massachusetts legislature in the 1890s. Alongside that work, he wrote widely on education, local history, and military subjects, especially Civil War regimental history.

Roe died in 1917, but his writing remains useful to readers interested in firsthand historical memory and the civic life of Worcester and Massachusetts. His background as a soldier, teacher, and public servant gave his work a practical, grounded voice.
