About the author

Born in Liverpool in 1829, Alfred Rimmer trained as an architect before becoming known as an artist and author. Reliable biographical sources describe him as an English artist and writer who studied at Liverpool College, worked in architecture, and later devoted himself more fully to painting and publishing.

Rimmer wrote richly illustrated books on British buildings, towns, and historic landscapes, including works on ancient streets, stone crosses, and the homes of Prince Albert. His background in drawing and design gave his writing a strong visual quality, which helped make subjects like architecture, travel, and local history feel lively rather than dry.

He died in 1893 in Chester. Today he is remembered as one of those versatile Victorian figures who moved comfortably between art, architecture, and popular historical writing.
