About the author

Born in 1841 at Heworth near Gateshead, Alfred Plummer was educated at Lancing College and Exeter College, Oxford. He went on to become a fellow, tutor, and dean at Trinity College, Oxford, before serving for many years at University College, Durham, where he was master and professor of New Testament exegesis.

Plummer is best remembered as a biblical scholar, church historian, and theological writer. He wrote widely on the New Testament, including well-known commentaries on Luke, John, and the pastoral and Pauline epistles, as well as works on early church history. His books were valued for being learned, careful, and readable.

He died in 1926 in Bideford, England. Today he is chiefly remembered by readers of biblical studies and church history, especially for scholarship that helped make serious academic study more accessible to clergy, students, and general readers.
