by Alfred Plummer
Born in 1841 and remembered as a biblical scholar, church historian, cleric, and translator, Alfred Plummer built a long career around making Christian history and scripture study accessible to serious readers. His published work shows both range and consistency, with books on the Gospels, the epistles, the early church, and the Continental Reformation.
Among his best-known works are commentaries on Luke, Matthew, the Pastoral Epistles, the Epistles of John, and the letters to the Corinthians, Thessalonians, and Philippians. He also edited historical and theological volumes and translated major works from German, showing how comfortably he moved between scholarship, teaching, and church life.
Plummer died in 1926. Today he is chiefly valued as one of the substantial English biblical commentators of his era, a writer whose careful, text-centered books helped shape generations of students, clergy, and interested general readers.
