by Alfred Kubin
Born in 1877 in Leitmeritz, Bohemia, Alfred Kubin became one of the most distinctive graphic artists of the early 20th century. He studied in Munich and developed a visual world filled with strange creatures, anxious landscapes, and scenes that feel half dream, half nightmare.
Kubin is best remembered for drawings, prints, and illustrations that explored fear, fantasy, and the unconscious. His work is often linked to Symbolism and Expressionism, and it stood out for its dark mood and vivid imagination.
He was also a writer: his 1909 novel The Other Side remains an important work of fantastic fiction. Kubin died in 1959 in Zwickledt, Upper Austria, leaving behind a body of work that still feels hauntingly modern.
