A Victorian expert on pianos and keyboard history, he spent decades close to the instrument trade and turned that firsthand knowledge into lively books on music and instruments.

by Alfred J. (Alfred James) Hipkins
Born in 1826, Alfred James Hipkins was an English writer and authority on musical instruments, especially the piano. He worked for the piano firm Broadwood, a connection that gave him practical knowledge of instrument making, design, and performance traditions.
Hipkins became known for explaining musical history in a clear, useful way. His books include Musical Instruments, Historic, Rare and Unique and A Description and History of the Pianoforte and of the Older Keyboard Stringed Instruments. He also contributed to reference works and wrote about keyboard instruments with the eye of both a historian and an insider.
That mix of scholarship and hands-on experience helped make his work lasting and readable. He died in 1903, but he is still remembered by readers interested in the history of the piano and the wider world of early keyboard instruments.
