About the author

Born in London in 1826, Alfred James Hipkins became an apprentice piano tuner at John Broadwood & Sons while still a teenager. That practical start turned into a long career with one of Britain’s best-known piano makers, and it gave him the firsthand knowledge that later made his books and essays so valuable.

Hipkins went on to become an English musician, musicologist, and musical antiquary with a special interest in keyboard instruments, tuning, and musical acoustics. He wrote about the pianoforte and older keyboard instruments with unusual clarity, drawing on both workshop experience and historical research.

He is especially remembered for helping preserve and explain the story of the piano in the 19th century. His work connected instrument makers, performers, and scholars, and it remains useful to readers interested in the history of music and instruments.
