About the author

Born in Edinburgh in 1863, Alexis Thomson—more fully Henry Alexis Thomson—became a distinguished Scottish anatomist, surgeon, and author. He studied at the University of Edinburgh, where he built a strong academic reputation before going on to a major teaching and clinical career.

He is best known as Professor of Systematic Surgery at the University of Edinburgh, a post he held from 1909 to 1923. Alongside his university work, he wrote important medical texts, including the widely known Manual of Surgery, helping bring surgical knowledge to students and practitioners in a clear, practical form.

Thomson was also recognized beyond Britain, becoming an honorary member of both the French Association of Surgeons and the American Society of Clinical Surgery. He died in 1924, remembered as an influential teacher and medical author whose work connected scholarship with day-to-day surgical practice.
