About the author

Born on the island of Skiathos in 1851, Alexandros Papadiamantis became one of the most admired figures in modern Greek literature. He is especially remembered for his short stories and for the way he wrote about the lives of poor families, sailors, villagers, and the devout world of the Greek islands.

His work often joins realism with a strong spiritual and moral atmosphere, drawing on Orthodox tradition while staying closely focused on the struggles of everyday life. Readers and critics have long valued the musical quality of his language and his ability to treat even humble characters with tenderness and insight.

Papadiamantis died in 1911, but his reputation has only grown. He remains a central presence in Greek letters, celebrated for fiction that is intimate, humane, and deeply rooted in place.
