About the author

Born on Skiathos in 1851, Alexandros Papadiamantis grew up in the world that would later fill so much of his fiction. He became one of Greece’s most important prose writers, celebrated especially for his short stories and for the novel The Murderess.

His writing is closely tied to the landscapes, customs, and ordinary people of island life. Readers and critics have long valued the compassion in his work, as well as the way it blends realism, religious feeling, and close attention to everyday hardship.

Papadiamantis died on Skiathos in 1911, but his reputation only grew after his lifetime. Today he is still widely read as a central figure in modern Greek literature, admired for prose that feels intimate, humane, and enduring.
