About the author

Born in Ruhla on January 20, 1822, Alexander Ziegler became known as a German travel writer, economist, and government councilor. From an early age he was drawn to geography and the wider world, and that interest shaped both his travels and his writing.

He is especially remembered for books inspired by his journeys through North America and the Caribbean, including works on the United States and Wisconsin. His writing often combined firsthand travel observation with attention to economics, settlement, and everyday conditions, making his books useful not only as travel narratives but also as guides for readers interested in emigration and life abroad.

Ziegler died in Wiesbaden on April 8, 1887. A portrait photograph was not readily available from the sources found, so the image here uses a memorial plaque associated with him rather than a true portrait.
