About the author

Born in Kirriemuir in 1836, Alexander Whyte became one of Scotland’s best-known ministers and religious writers. He served for many years at Free St. George’s in Edinburgh, where his preaching drew wide attention for its intensity, insight, and practical spiritual focus.

Whyte also wrote and edited widely, helping new readers discover older Christian classics. He is especially remembered for books such as Bunyan Characters, which explored the people in John Bunyan’s writings with sympathy and psychological depth.

Later in life, he became principal of New College, Edinburgh. He died in 1921, leaving behind a reputation as a thoughtful preacher, teacher, and interpreter of devotional literature.
