Born in Kirriemuir, Scotland, in 1836, Alexander Whyte became one of the best-known ministers of the Free Church of Scotland. He studied at the University of Aberdeen and at New College, Edinburgh, and later served for many years at St. George's Free Church in Edinburgh.
Whyte built a wide reputation as a preacher with a strong moral voice and an imaginative style. He was also a prolific author, remembered especially for devotional and biographical works such as Bible Characters and studies of figures like Bunyan and Samuel Rutherford.
In 1898 he was chosen as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland. He died in 1921, but his sermons and spiritual portraits have continued to attract readers who appreciate thoughtful, heartfelt Christian writing.
