About the author

Born in Kishinev in 1875, he became one of the best-known Russian and Soviet pianists of his time. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory and later built a career that combined performing, composing, writing about music, and teaching.

Much of his life was connected with the Moscow Conservatory, where he taught for many years and also served as rector. He was especially respected as a piano teacher, and his influence reached far beyond his own performances through the students and musicians he trained.

He died in 1961, leaving behind not only compositions and recordings, but also memoirs and writings that give a vivid picture of Russian musical culture across a time of enormous change.
