About the author

Born in Riga in 1883, Alejandro Lipschütz was a Latvian-born physician, scientist, and thinker who later made Chile his home. He studied medicine in Germany and settled in Chile in 1926, where he became an important figure in experimental biology and academic life.

His scientific work focused on physiology and endocrinology, and he is widely remembered in Chile as a pioneer of experimental biology. Alongside that research, he also wrote extensively on anthropology and Indigenous issues, challenging racist ideas and arguing for a more serious understanding of Indigenous cultures and rights in the Americas.

Over a long career, he became known not only as a laboratory scientist but also as a public intellectual whose interests crossed medicine, philosophy, and social thought. He received Chile's National Prize for Science in 1969, and his legacy endures in both the scientific and humanistic sides of his work.
