About the author

Abū Rayḥān Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Bīrūnī, commonly known as Al-Biruni, was a Persian scholar born in 973 in Khwarazm and active across Central and South Asia. He studied and wrote about astronomy, mathematics, geography, chronology, medicine, and languages, earning a reputation as one of the most wide-ranging intellectuals of the medieval era.

His best-known work on India, often called Kitab al-Hind or India, describes Indian religions, philosophy, science, customs, and geography. He also produced important astronomical and mathematical writings, including the Mas'udi Canon, and is remembered for his careful use of observation, measurement, and comparison.

Al-Biruni died in 1048 in Ghazni. His books remain valuable both for their scientific ideas and for the remarkably thoughtful way he approached cultures different from his own.
