About the author

Born in Brazil in 1873, Alberto Santos-Dumont grew up in a wealthy coffee-growing family and later moved in circles where engineering, speed, and invention were part of everyday life. He settled in France and became known for bold experiments with balloons and dirigibles, turning aviation into a public spectacle at a time when human flight still felt almost impossible.

He won international attention in the early 1900s for his airship flights around Paris, including a celebrated circuit of the Eiffel Tower. He is also remembered for the 14-bis, the aircraft with which he made a widely recognized powered flight in Europe in 1906. In Brazil, he is often honored as a foundational figure in aviation history.

Santos-Dumont's life mixed glamour, technical curiosity, and intense personal dedication. He spent his later years in declining health and died in 1932, but his name remains closely tied to the romance and daring of early flight.
