About the author

Born in Padua in 1741, Alberto Fortis was a Venetian writer, naturalist, and cartographer who spent much of his life exploring the lands and islands along the eastern Adriatic. He traveled widely in Dalmatia and became especially interested in the region’s geology, natural history, and local culture.

He is best remembered for Viaggio in Dalmazia (1774), a travel book that helped introduce Dalmatia to readers across Europe. The book combined observations of landscapes and minerals with descriptions of customs, communities, and oral traditions, showing how closely Fortis linked the study of nature with the study of people.

Fortis died in Bologna in 1803. Today he is remembered as a lively Enlightenment-era observer whose writing sits at the meeting point of science, travel, and cultural history.
