About the author

Born in Padua in 1741, Alberto Fortis became known as a writer, naturalist, and cartographer whose curiosity carried him across the Adriatic world. He lived during a time when travel writing, natural history, and scholarship often overlapped, and his books reflect that mix of careful observation and adventurous spirit.

Fortis is especially associated with his travels in Dalmatia, which he described in Viaggio in Dalmazia. In those pages, he wrote about the region’s landscape, people, customs, and natural history, helping bring attention to an area that was little known to many readers in western Europe.

Remembered today as a learned and energetic observer, he left behind a body of work that connects literature, geography, and early scientific inquiry. He died in 1803, but his travel writing still offers a lively window into how the Adriatic world was seen in the late 18th century.
