A German legal scholar who built much of his career at the University of Basel, he wrote on criminal law, public law, and legal history. His work also included a history of the University of Basel, showing how closely his scholarship was tied to academic life there.
Born in Breslau on October 13, 1844, Albert Fedor Reinhard Teichmann was a German jurist and university teacher. He earned a doctorate in law in Berlin in 1867 and later moved into academic work that brought him to Basel.
Teichmann became an associate professor in Basel in 1872 and, from 1877 until the end of the winter term 1905–06, served there as professor of public law. He was also rector of the University of Basel in 1884, reflecting the important place he held in the institution.
Alongside his teaching, he published works on criminal law and legal history. He is also remembered for writing a history of the University of Basel during the fifty years after its reorganization, a book that connects his legal scholarship with the story of the university itself.
