About the author

Born in Rautalampi on February 14, 1835, Albert Kukkonen was a Finnish folk poet remembered especially in connection with Hinkkala, the family farm where he was born and later worked as master. He lived his whole life in the Rautalampi area and died there on December 3, 1918.

Sources agree that he began writing poetry in his youth, and some of those early poems were preserved in the archives of the Finnish Literature Society. Local history materials also describe him as an active and respected figure in his community, with a role in municipal life and in promoting the establishment of a primary school in Rautalampi.

Kukkonen devoted himself more deeply to poetry after handing over the management of the farm to his son. His work is best known through the collection Rautalammin runoniekan Albert Kukkosen runoja, published in 1913, which helps preserve the voice of a self-taught writer closely tied to the landscape and everyday life of central Finland.
