About the author

Born in Franeker on October 11, 1803, he trained in law at the University of Groningen and later worked as a lawyer in Leeuwarden. He also served in public life, including as secretary of Franeker and as a member of the Dutch House of Representatives.

Alongside his legal and political work, he was strongly involved in literary and scholarly circles in Friesland. Sources describe him as an active supporter of Frisian language, history, and legal history, and as someone who argued for preserving the Franeker Athenaeum.

He is remembered not only as a jurist and politician, but also as a writer and researcher whose interests reached into grammar, regional history, and older Frisian law. He died in Franeker on September 17, 1863.
