About the author

Born in Mendoza, Argentina, on July 15, 1857, Agustín Álvarez became known as a military officer, educator, sociologist, and essayist. He is commonly linked to the Generation of 1880, a group of Argentine intellectuals and public figures deeply involved in debates about nation-building, education, and public life.

His writing focused on political culture, social behavior, and moral questions. Works such as Manual de patología política and ¿Adónde vamos? helped build his reputation as a bold and critical thinker who examined the habits and ideas shaping Argentine society.

Álvarez also played an important role in higher education. The National University of La Plata remembers him as its first vice president and a professor there, where he taught history of institutions. He died in Mar del Plata on February 15, 1914.
