About the author

Writing under the name Agnes Rothery, Agnes Edwards Pratt was an American author whose work ranged from travel books to fiction. She is especially associated with travel writing, and her books often explored the character of places as much as their scenery.

Before and during her writing career, she worked in literary journalism and magazine publishing. Sources connect her with editorial work at Ladies' Home Journal and the Boston Herald, and note contributions to publications including House Beautiful, Reader's Digest, and the Virginia Quarterly Review.

Her books show a wide curiosity about both the United States and the wider world, with titles on Virginia, Iceland, Denmark, and South America among them. She died in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 1954, and her papers are held at the University of Virginia.
