About the author

Born in Leipzig on June 14, 1835, Adolf Stern—born Adolf Ernst—became known as a German poet, literary historian, and teacher. He studied at the universities of Leipzig and Jena, building the scholarly foundation that would define much of his career.

In 1868 he was appointed professor of the history of literature at the Royal Saxon Polytechnic in Dresden. Alongside his academic work, he wrote poetry and fiction, giving him a rare perspective as both a critic of literature and a practicing author.

Stern spent much of his life helping readers make sense of German and modern literature, and he remained an important literary figure in Dresden until his death there on April 15, 1907.
