About the author

Born on January 15, 1818, Adam-Charles-Gustave Desmazures was a Canadian priest and writer. He first trained and worked as a lawyer before joining the Sulpicians in 1844, a turn that shaped the rest of his life and writing.

He was ordained in Paris on December 23, 1848, and remained in France until 1851. After returning to Canada, he served in Montreal from 1851 until his death, including work as vicar at Saint-Jacques and at Notre-Dame.

Desmazures was also recognized for his literary work: Université Laval awarded him a doctorate in letters in 1868. He died on September 30, 1891, remembered as both a churchman and a man of letters in 19th-century Quebec.
