About the author

Born in Brooklyn in 1860, Adah Louise Sutton wrote as both Adah Louise Sutton and Louise A. Field. Reliable library and reference sources identify her as an American author and poet, and note that she later became known for continuing stories based on Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit character.

She is also associated with Akron, Ohio, through her marriage to Arthur J. Saalfield of the Saalfield Publishing Company. A University of Akron women’s history profile describes her as active not only in writing but also in social and philanthropic work.

Her books include children’s favorites such as Teddy Bears and A Little Maid in Toyland. Though not as widely known today as some of her contemporaries, she left behind a varied body of popular writing for young readers.
