A Portuguese priest-poet whose writing blends spiritual feeling with youthful intensity, he left behind poems, legends, children’s literature, and journalism despite a very short life.

by Acúrcio Correia da Silva
Born on October 22, 1889, in Oliveira do Bairro, Portugal, he was ordained in Coimbra in 1912 and celebrated his first Mass later that year. Sources describe him as an accomplished speaker as well as a poet and prose writer.
His work moved across several genres: poetry, chronicles, legends, children’s literature, and contributions to regional newspapers around Aveiro. Dôr e Luz (Versos de um seminarista) is the title most often associated with him, and it reflects the religious and emotional atmosphere of his early writing.
He died in 1925 in Sangalhos, Portugal. Although not widely known today, he remains a notable local literary figure, remembered for joining clerical life with a lively and varied literary voice.
