About the author

Often described as a semi-mythological hermit and strategist, Huang Shigong is associated with the turbulent transition between the Qin and Han periods in ancient China. Traditional accounts present him less as a fully documented historical person and more as a wise elder whose teachings shaped later political and military thought.

He is most famous for the text usually called The Three Strategies of Huang Shigong (San Lue), one of the important works of classical Chinese strategy. In legend, he gives this treatise to the future Han statesman Zhang Liang, helping turn him into a brilliant advisor. That story helped make Huang Shigong a memorable figure in both military lore and popular imagination.

Because the sources around him are partly legendary, many details of his life remain uncertain. Even so, the ideas attached to his name endured for centuries, especially those about leadership, timing, discipline, and the careful use of power.
