About the author

Born in 1796 in Stanwick, Yorkshire, Anne Bowman later lived in Richmond with her brother, a bookseller, and seems to have begun publishing in the 1850s. She is associated with Victorian juvenile fiction and is remembered for writing adventure stories for younger readers.

Her books include The Castaways; or, The Adventures of a Family in the Wilds of Africa, The Kangaroo Hunters; or, Adventures in the Bush, The Boy Voyagers, and The Young Exiles. These stories often place children or families in unfamiliar landscapes where resourcefulness, endurance, and curiosity drive the plot.

Although detailed biographical information is limited in the sources I found, her work shows how strongly 19th century readers were drawn to tales of travel and discovery. She died in 1886, leaving behind a body of fiction that offers a clear glimpse of Victorian adventure writing for the young.
