About the author

Born in 1795 at Trefriw in North Wales, Evan Evans became widely known by his bardic name, Ieuan Glan Geirionydd. He was educated for the ministry and later served as an Anglican clergyman, while also building a reputation as a poet and prose writer in Welsh.

His work ranged across poetry, essays, editing, and journalism. One of the books linked with him in 1832 is A Letter Addressed to the Right Honourable Lord Robert Grosvenor, M.P., where he appears as the chaplain to the Chester Cambrian Society, a group concerned with supporting Welsh speakers in Chester. That combination of religious work and cultural advocacy fits the broader shape of his career.

He is remembered as one of the notable Welsh literary figures of the 19th century, with writing that helped keep Welsh literary and cultural life visible in print. Later in life he was also involved in editing major Welsh works, including Y Bibl Darluniadol.
