About the author

Very little is known for certain about Domingos Paes beyond what survives in historical records, but he is remembered as a Portuguese traveler who visited the Vijayanagara Empire around 1520. He likely came from Portuguese India and traveled during the reign of Krishnadevaraya, one of the empire’s most celebrated rulers.

Paes is best known for the detailed narrative he left behind after visiting the imperial capital, usually identified with Vijayanagara at Hampi. His observations describe the city’s scale, busy markets, courtly life, military strength, and public celebrations, making his account an important source for historians studying South India in the 16th century.

What makes his work so enduring is its immediacy. Rather than writing a distant legend, Paes recorded what he saw and learned as a visitor, and that firsthand perspective has helped later generations picture one of the great cities of its time.
