active 1655 Michel Millot

Best known as a presumed co-author of a scandalous 17th-century French dialogue, this little-documented writer survives in literary history through a single notorious title. The work’s mix of frank sexuality and conversational wit helped give it an afterlife far beyond its original moment.

About the author

Very little can be confirmed about this French writer beyond a floruit around 1655. Library authority records list him as an early modern French author, but biographical details such as birth, death, and a fuller career remain unclear.

He is chiefly associated with L'Escole des filles (The School of Venus), an erotic dialogue first published in the mid-17th century. Modern catalogs and reference pages connect his name to that book, though some sources also note uncertainty around its authorship and mention Jean L'Ange alongside him.

That uncertainty is part of why he remains such a shadowy figure today. Even so, the book linked to his name has kept him in view as part of the history of French libertine and erotic literature.
