Active in the early 13th century, Guillaume de Tudèle—also known as Guilhem or William of Tudela—is remembered as the author of the first part of the Song of the Albigensian Crusade. This epic poem in Occitan recounts the Albigensian Crusade, the campaign launched against the Cathars in southern France.
His poem matters not only as literature but also as a historical source. Because it was written close to the events it describes, it offers a rare contemporary perspective on a turbulent period in medieval Europe.
Little is firmly known about his life beyond his connection to this work and the years in which he was active, usually given as about 1199 to 1214. Even so, his writing has ensured that his name remains closely linked to one of the most important narrative accounts of the crusade.
