About the author

Born in Orimattila on December 23, 1873, Adolf Johan "Aatto" Sirén was a Finnish smallholder and a long-serving figure in the labor movement. He represented the Social Democratic Party in the Parliament of Finland across several terms between 1907 and 1936, building a reputation as someone especially engaged with agricultural questions and the lives of rural working people.

Sirén is also remembered as a writer of political memoir and reflection. His best-known work, Hajamuistelmia pakolaiselämästä, draws on his experiences as a refugee after the Finnish Civil War and describes life in revolutionary Russia through personal sketches rather than distant history. That firsthand perspective gives his writing a direct, human quality.

He died in Orimattila on March 14, 1955. For listeners today, Sirén is interesting not only as a public figure but as a witness: someone who wrote about upheaval from the inside, with attention to both politics and ordinary life.
