A leading early voice of Finnish literary modernism, this poet brought a scientist’s eye and a dreamer’s imagination to the page. His work often joins vivid nature imagery with inward, searching emotion.

Born in Oulu in 1893, Aaro Hellaakoski became one of the key early modernists in Finnish poetry. Alongside his literary work, he also built a career in geography, teaching and researching physical geography and geomorphology.
That blend of poet and scientist shaped his writing in memorable ways. Critics and reference sources note how closely his poems are tied to the natural world, and works such as Jääpeili helped secure his reputation; his poem Hauen laulu is often singled out as a classic.
Hellaakoski earned a doctorate in geography in 1929 and worked for many years as both a schoolteacher and university teacher. He died in Helsinki in 1952, but his poetry has remained widely read and admired in Finland.
