Born in Oulu on June 22, 1893, Aaro Hellaakoski became one of the key pioneers of Finnish modernist poetry. Alongside poems, he also wrote prose and essays, and his writing is still remembered for its originality and its willingness to experiment with form.
He was not only a writer but also a geographer and teacher. Sources describe him as a scholar of geography who published scientific research and worked as a teacher, giving his literary work a strong sense of landscape, physical detail, and the natural world.
Hellaakoski died in Helsinki on November 23, 1952. His reputation has lasted well beyond his lifetime, and he is still widely regarded as one of the most important Finnish poets of the first half of the 20th century.
