A Finnish playwright from Oulu, he wrote light stage comedies and farces that found readers well beyond his own time. He was also a house painter by trade, which gives his work a grounded, everyday feel.

by Aapo Selja
Aapo Selja was a Finnish playwright, born in Oulu on February 28, 1877. Before 1898 he was known as Abraham Skopa, and he came from a working-class family.
Alongside his writing, he worked as a painter by trade. That practical background seems to fit the tone of the work he is best known for: short comic plays and entertaining stage pieces, including Amerikasta palatessa.
Selja died in Oulu on June 18, 1940. Although he is not widely known outside Finland, surviving library and public-domain records show that his plays continued to circulate long after his lifetime.
