About the author

Born in 1853, Arthur William Moore was a Manx antiquarian, historian, linguist, and folklorist who published as A. W. Moore. He is especially remembered for documenting the Isle of Man in works on its history, folklore, and names, and for helping shape the late 19th-century Manx cultural revival.

Moore's writing was grounded in a wide range of interests: he collected traditional lore and music, studied the Manx language, and wrote major historical works including A History of the Isle of Man. Alongside his literary and scholarly work, he was active in public life and served as Speaker of the House of Keys.

He died in 1909, but his books remain valuable for readers interested in Manx identity, local history, and the preservation of regional culture. His work still stands out for the breadth of its research and for the care he brought to recording the stories and traditions of the island.
