About the author

Born in Raahe on December 4, 1845, and later known by the surname Ervasti, he worked as a journalist, explorer, and writer with a lasting interest in Karelia and northern Finland. Reliable reference sources describe him as a Finnish newspaperman and research traveler, and note that he edited the newspaper Pohjois-Suomi in Oulu from 1878 to 1883 before later working in Helsinki.

His writing is especially remembered for travel accounts based on journeys in Russian Karelia and along the Arctic coast. Those books brought distant regions and everyday life there closer to Finnish readers, and they are still preserved and circulated today, including through Project Gutenberg and later reprints.

Ervasti also wrote fiction. A historical novel of his, Ahma, remained in archives for more than a century before being published in modern times, which suggests how much of his work was rediscovered after his death in Helsinki on August 8, 1900.
