About the author

Born in 1833, Alexander Taylor Innes was a Scottish lawyer and writer who became known both as an advocate and as an author on religious and historical subjects. He was educated at the University of Edinburgh and built a legal career in Scotland, eventually receiving the title of Advocate Depute and later serving as Sheriff of Berwick and Haddington.

Alongside his legal work, he wrote widely on theology, church history, and biography. He contributed to well-known reference works and periodicals, and he is especially associated with studies of figures such as John Knox and Thomas Chalmers. His writing shows a strong interest in the intellectual and spiritual debates of 19th-century Scotland.

Innes died in 1912. Remembered as both a public man and a man of letters, he left behind work that connects Scottish legal culture with the religious and literary world of his era.
