About the author

Born Rose Laure Allatini in Vienna in 1890 and raised in London, she was an Austrian-British novelist who published under several pseudonyms, including A. T. Fitzroy, R. Allatini, Lucian Wainwright, Mrs Cyril Scott, and Eunice Buckley. She is most often remembered today for Despised and Rejected, a First World War novel issued in 1918 under the name A. T. Fitzroy.

That book became notable for more than its story: it was banned in Britain under wartime regulations after only a limited sale. The novel’s mix of pacifism and queer themes helped it stand out, and its later rediscovery has made the A. T. Fitzroy name especially significant in discussions of overlooked early 20th-century fiction.

Allatini was also a prolific writer beyond that single book, publishing across romance and other genres over many years. The range of names she used suggests both literary versatility and a practical instinct for navigating the publishing world of her time.
