About the author

Born in Philadelphia in 1876, Abraham Simon Wolf Rosenbach built his reputation on a mix of deep literary knowledge and sharp business sense. He studied at the University of Pennsylvania, earning both a B.S. and a Ph.D., and started collecting rare books while still a student.

Working with his brother Philip through the Rosenbach Company, he became one of the most influential rare book and manuscript dealers in the United States. He helped build major collections for institutions and collectors including the Huntington Library, the Folger Shakespeare Library, and J. P. Morgan, and he became widely known for dramatic, high-profile purchases.

Rosenbach also wrote about the world of collecting, sharing its pleasures and rivalries with a broad audience. His legacy lives on in Philadelphia’s Rosenbach Museum & Library, founded from the brothers’ collections and homes, which reflects the lasting impact he had on American literary and cultural history.
