About the author

Born on February 23, 1855, in Scremerston, Northumberland, Arthur Humble Evans was a British ornithologist and author. He is best known for his writing on birds and for bringing natural history to general readers in a direct, practical way.

Evans studied at Durham School and later at Clare College, Cambridge. Alongside ornithology, he was also active in botany, and his work reflects the broad interests of a Victorian and Edwardian naturalist who paid close attention to the living world.

He died on March 28, 1943. Remembered as a careful observer and lucid writer, Evans remains associated with classic works of natural history, especially those centered on bird life and distribution.
