About the author

Born on 8 February 1845, Arthur Henry Johnson was an English historian, priest, and long-serving figure in Oxford academic life. He was educated at Eton and Exeter College, Oxford, and later became closely associated with All Souls College, where he served as chaplain.

Johnson taught history for many years and wrote books including The Normans in Europe and Europe in the Sixteenth Century. He also played a pioneering part in the growth of Oxford's work in continuing education, helping extend university teaching beyond its traditional student body.

Alongside his scholarly career, he had a surprising place in sports history: he was a member of the Oxford University football team that won the FA Cup in 1874. He died on 31 January 1927, remembered as a distinctive Oxford don whose life joined scholarship, religion, teaching, and public service.
