About the author

Born in Helsinki in 1832, Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld was a Finland-Swedish scientist and explorer who built his career around geology, mineralogy, and Arctic research. After studying at the University of Helsinki, he later settled in Stockholm, where he became closely involved with Swedish scientific expeditions.

He took part in a series of voyages to Svalbard and Greenland, but he is most famous for leading the Vega expedition of 1878–1879. That journey became the first complete crossing of the Northeast Passage, sailing along the northern coast of Eurasia from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The achievement made him one of the best-known polar explorers of the nineteenth century.

Nordenskiöld was also a prolific writer whose travel accounts brought Arctic science and exploration to a wide audience. His work combined careful observation with a sense of adventure, which is part of why his books still appeal to readers interested in exploration history.
